New York hospital cuts 2 management, 4 nonclinical staff positions

Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital, a member of Olean-based Upper Allegheny Health System, confirmed it recently implemented layoffs.

Layoffs included two management and four nonclinical staff positions, Upper Allegheny spokesperson Dennis McCarthy told Becker's Hospital Review in an emailed statement. The hospital also made two full-time positions part-time and cut an additional 11 vacant positions.

Mr. McCarthy attributed the layoffs to a need "to adjust to changes in patient activity."

"We continue to deal with ongoing shifts in volume within inpatient and outpatient care so we need to rebalance staffing from time to time in order to put the right people in the right places and provide effective care," he said. "In the current changing healthcare environment it is necessary to continually monitor staffing and, when necessary, make adjustments."

This doesn't mean the hospital hasn't hired workers. Mr. McCarthy pointed to the hospital recently adding 15 full-time equivalent direct patient care positions, nine of which are for registered nurses. OGH, which has more than 800 employees at the hospital and outpatient centers, anticipates to fill those RN positions this month.
