A recent report by Miami-Dade County Inspector General Christopher Mazzella identified "wasteful" spending by Jackson Health System in regards to its international program.
Foundation Health Services, a non-profit affiliate of Jackson's foundation, manages the Jackson Memorial Hospital - International program, which oversees Jackson's relationships and affiliations with hospitals outside the United States.
The report identified more than $100,000 in questionable credit card expenditures by FHS employees, including more than $7,000 for flowers, gifts and birthday cakes. The report also found that FHS could not account for 13 inventoriable pieces of office equipment valued at $16,163 and that poor procurement planning resulted in over $80,000 of questionable equipment purchases.
The health system disagreed with the OIG's findings, saying that a private non-profit business should not be analyzed from a public perspective.
The OIG calls this report the first in a series regarding FHS activities.
