MetroHealth in Cleveland to Cut 450 Jobs, $30M to Offset Losses

Cleveland-based MetroHealth System expects to cut 450 jobs over the next two months, hoping to shave $30 million off its budget and lower its losses in 2011, according to a Cleveland Plain Dealer report.

Roughly one-third of the cut positions are expected to come from not replacing employees who have left, according to the report. Other cuts could include nursing home employees, administrative and supervisor positions and lower-paid support service workers who deal with laundry and housekeeping.

The announcement of job cuts comes as MetroHealth said it was on track to lose $1.1 million this year after it had projected a profit, the report said. Uncompensated healthcare has increased 8 percent at the health system, and through July, it had spent roughly $166 million on charity care.
