Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System is laying off 142 workers as part of its third and last phase of an employee reduction plan expected to save the hospital up to $11.5 million per year, according to a Times Free Press report.
This portion of layoffs is about 3 percent of the system's 4,700 employees. Positions have been eliminated across Erlanger's six hospital campuses and various departments, but most occured in support rather than clinical areas.
Of the affected employees, 55 percent accepted voluntary buyout packages, 25 percent were previously placed on probation for disciplinary issues and 20 percent were laid off involuntarily, according to the report.
A hospital spokesperson said the workforce reduction plan let Erlanger achieve its goal of 5.4 full-time equivalent employers per adjusted occupied bed — the average for a teaching hospital. Before, the hospital had a 5.7 to 5.8 average.
