Meridian-based East Mississippi State Hospital, which provides behavioral health, chemical dependency and nursing home services, will cut 74 jobs as the facility faces decreased funding, reports The Meridian Star.
Here are four things to know.
1. State budget cuts played a role in the decision to eliminate jobs. In total, EMSH faces a $5 million state budget cut, which is part of a nearly $20 million cut to the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, according to the report.
2. Affected jobs include recreational staff, administrative staff and teachers at EMSH's Bradley Sanders Adolescent Complex, according to the report.
3. In addition to the job cuts, EMSH plans to consolidate its adolescent complex with the Oak Circle Center at Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield, according to the report.
4. Charles Carlisle, director of EMSH, told The Meridian Star some facility employees, such as direct care staff, nurses and psychologists, could potentially move to Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield. He noted other employees could potentially move to local government positions.
