Washington Township Health Care District in Fremont, Calif., has eliminated 200 full-time positions, affecting approximately 68 employees at Washington Hospital in Fremont, according to a Fremont Argus report.
District administrators began implementing the layoffs without a public notice, discussion or vote, according to the report. Officials said they had no choice but to eliminate roughly 13 percent of the healthcare district's workforce, which is expected to save the district $16.1 million.
A government advocate said such staffing decisions can only be decided in open meetings, according to the report, but a district attorney said in the report that "public notice was not required."
