Nurses with the Minneapolis-based Allina Health System are frustrated over the new scrubs they'll be required to wear, according to a report in The Pioneer Press.
To help patients identify different members of the care team, the health system will dress nurses in navy scrubs, respiratory therapists in olive green and licensed practical nurses in eggplant.
Union nurses are concerned that the new navy-blue color uniforms they'll have to sport are dark and muted. Further, union officials find issue with the top-down way the uniform change was implemented — they didn't get a say in it — and believe it stomps on autonomy.
"People take a lot of pride in what they wear to work," said Cristin Betzold, an oncology nurse with Allina. "I think people don't agree (with the change), but obviously nobody wants to be terminated because they chose not to wear navy blue."
The Minnesota Nurses Association has filed a grievance over the new uniform policy.
"The dress code is always under review and we are currently entertaining administering a patient study which will help identify their needs specific to dress," said a spokeswoman for Allina.
