Hospital Industry Leader to Know: Mary Jo Lewis, New CEO of Sumner Regional Health Systems

After 11 years as CEO of Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield, Ky., Mary Jo Lewis will take the helm at Sumner Regional Health Systems in Gallatin, Tenn., by the end of August.

During Ms. Lewis' tenure at Jackson Purchase, the 107-bed hospital received exemplary scores in patient satisfaction and was recognized as one of Thomas Reuters 100 Top Hospitals. Commenting on Ms. Lewis' appointment to Sumner, LifePoint CEO Bill Carpenter called the executive "an accomplished hospital CEO with a track record of achieving significant success for hospitals."

"She has the right combination of experience, expertise and leadership capabilities to lead SRHS forward during this exciting time of change," he said.
It certainly is a period of change for Sumner: by the end of the month, LifePoint Hospitals will finalize its acquisition of the bankrupt hospital system. LifePoint announced its intention to buy Sumner for $145 million in May, and late last month, the parties reached an agreement to proceed toward an Aug. 31 closing.

Considering Ms. Lewis' successes with Jackson Purchase, she is in a good position to head the previously struggling health system. In Sept. 2009, she commented on the $5 million renovation of the hospital's emergency department, saying, "The primary purpose of the expansion was to address the 44 percent increase in ER volume that we have experienced during the past five years. I attribute the significant increase in volume to two main factors: First, our turnaround time in the ER is less than half of the industry average and second, our ER staff has a fine reputation in this region."

Ms. Lewis earned her master's degree in finance from Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill.
