Women & Children's Hospital, Roswell Park Cancer Institute to Plan Center of Excellence

Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo (N.Y.), part of Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding to plan a single center of excellence for pediatric inpatient/outpatient cancer services.

The hospital and cancer institute plan to combine cancer services to create a unified, physician-led hematology-oncology program in one location. The center would be housed on a dedicated floor of Kaleida's planned John R. Oishei Children's Hospital on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The new children's hospital will replace the existing Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo.

The proposed Pediatric Hematology Oncology Center will include inpatient beds, an outpatient clinic, isolation beds for blood and bone marrow transplant/high-dose therapy patients and infusion facilities for chemotherapy and blood products.

Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute have provided the pediatric hematology-oncology service for the Western New York region for more than 40 years, which each facility providing separate and complementary services, according to the release.

The women and children's hospital currently provides specialty pediatric services including surgery, anesthesia, intensive care and diagnostic imaging, while the cancer institute provides oncology clinical leadership and services including radiation therapy, certain highly-specialized diagnostic services, blood and marrow transplants and clinical trials.
