UC San Diego Health System announced the launch of a new program to personalize cancer treatment at its UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
The My Answer to Cancer program will analyze each cancer patient's DNA to determine the best individual treatment. The program will include two parallel approaches: a research approach to discover new genetic mutations that cause cancer, and a patient-care approach that will use known mutations and DNA abnormalities to direct patients to clinical studies of treatments for the specific abnormalities, according to the release.
Under the research approach, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center will study cancer patients' DNA to create a data analysis model of clinical and biological data that can predict the effect of treatments on tumors with different DNA profiles. The patient-care approach will use the model's predictions to match patients with clinical trials that target their specific DNA profile.
UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center is seeking $5 million from the community to support this new program.
