The Mount Sinai Medical Center Opens Expanded Cancer Center

The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City announced the opening of its new Derald H. Ruttenberg Treatment Center of The Tisch Cancer Institute Oct. 31 in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The cancer center relocated from the Guggenheim Pavilion on Mount Sinai's main campus to the new Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine.

The hospital converted the cancer center's former space in the Guggenheim Pavilion from an ambulatory center to an inpatient unit to provide care for non-critical patients who could not return home due to the hurricane's destruction or because they could not access the necessary support services, according to the release.

The 50,000-square-foot Ruttenberg Treatment Center is double the size of its former space, allowing surgical oncology practices to relocate into the new building adjacent to medical oncology practices. The cancer center includes 48 exam rooms, 54 chemotherapy infusion suites and a patient resource center.

The Hess Center will also include the Tisch Cancer Institute's research facilities and laboratories for the following institutes:

•    The Friedman Brain Institute
•    Cardiovascular Research Institute
•    Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology
•    Translational and Molecular Imaging Institute

The hospital also plans to move the radiology department, including an imaging center and radiation oncology, to the Hess Center in 2013.
