Researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.,found MRI screening to be beneficial and cost-effective for women at high risk for breast cancer who have little or no insurance, according to a Duke Health news release.
The researchers gave women with no or little health insurance either MRI screenings or traditional mammograms depending on their risk for breast cancer. MRI screenings in the high-risk group detected seven cancers, suggesting that although the MRI imaging is more expensive than mammograms, it could be effective for high-risk women.
