Michigan Hospitals Downsize Specialty Expansions

Expansion plans from Beaumont Health System and Detroit Medical Center are proceeding, albeit at a smaller scale, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.

Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Health System recently announced it will proceed with a $140 million, 310,000-square-foot project, a downsized version of its original $200 million North Pavilion project, on which construction ceased in 2008. The health system is now projecting a possible second phase of development for the resurrected plan that would expand the current three floors up to eight.

The health system had been planning on resurrecting the pavilion project since its merger agreement with Henry Ford Health system fell through in May.

DMC's $42 million, 70,000-square-foot children's outpatient specialty center in Troy, which the health system announced earlier this month, is a smaller-scale version of the planned $50 million, 100,000-square-foot Royal Oak outpatient center, which was to serve both adults and children.

The CEO of Children's Hospital of Michigan indicated that DMC may close some of its smaller clinics and consolidate those services at the new Troy location.
