Erie County Medical Center and Kaleida Health, both based in Buffalo, N.Y., are opening a $27 million regional transplant and kidney care center, according to a Buffalo News report.
The Regional Center of Excellence in Transplantation and Kidney Care consolidates the formerly competitive transplantation and kidney programs of ECMC and Kaleida Health. The new center offers kidney dialysis, kidney and pancreas transplantation and a vascular access program that prepares and maintains the site on the body where blood is removed and returned during dialysis.
ECMC and Kaleida Health estimates the combined programs can increase the total number of kidney transplants performed from 90 last year to 150-200 annually, driven primarily by an increased capture of living donors.
