Mr. Peters suggested hospitals take the following steps to begin transforming their perioperative service line:
1. Identify a champion who can secure organizational commitment to focus on measurable quality outcomes.
2. Transform perioperative services governance by instituting a surgical services executive committee and daily huddles.
3. Gather information to measure performance.
4. Upgrade the preanesthesia testing process to identify and address risk factors prior to the day of surgery.
5. Consider a surgical home for complicated surgery.
