New York Work Group Tasked With Saving Cash-Strapped Hospitals

New York Commissioner of Health Nirav Shah, MD, has called on Stephen Berger, former chair of the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, to head a work group that will study the financial viability of New York hospitals, according to a Crain's New York Business news report.

The work group is being assembled as New York hospital finances continue to decline, even after Mr. Berger tried to cut the number of New York hospitals in order to improve the financial viability of surviving ones. Despite his efforts as the chair of the commission, half of Brooklyn's private hospitals still struggle financially, according to the news report.

With Mr. Berger at the helm, the work group would assess New York hospitals' strengths and weaknesses and then assemble recommendations on how to improve long-term viability. The work group will utilize hospital data and utilization patterns in order to make its recommendations. Mr. Berger has yet to pick the work group members he will bring on board and has not disclosed a projected timeline for when the recommendations would be released.

Asked whether any more New York hospitals would be closed, "speculation would be terrible at this point," he said.
