Construction for UMC is already underway and was planned to replace Louisiana State University's Charity Hospital, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
LSU Vice President Fred Cerise, MD, said the state has enough financing to complete the hospital project in phases without applying for additional bonds. According to the news report, the state has $800 million on hand and expects $118 million in reimbursements from FEMA, related to Charity Hospital's destruction.
Opponents of the hospital project have long voiced concerns about funding uncertainties and the hospital's long-term sustainability, though both Gov. Jindal and Mayor Landrieu have refuted those claims.
