Iowa hospitals provided more than $850 million in total uncompensated care, including charity care and bad debt, in 2010, according to an Iowa Hospital Association report.
The Iowa Hospital Association compiled data from 188 of Iowa's community hospitals on community benefits in 2010. Last year alone, those hospitals provided community benefits valued at more than $1.3 billion. Other notable statistics include the following:
• Medicare and Medicaid, comprising approximately 60 percent of all hospital revenue in Iowa, yielded approximately $259 million in losses for Iowa hospitals in 2010.
• Total uncompensated care in 2010 ($850 million) indicated a 6.8 percent increase from total uncompensated care in 2009.
• Other community benefits, including immunizations and nutritional services, totaled $212 million in 2010.
