HCA's affiliation with Tampa, Fla.-based University of South Florida Health to develop a state-wide network of trauma care is being challenged by three hospitals that argue there is not adequate demand to justify the expansion, according to a Tampa Tribune report.
HCA and USF announced their affiliation plans, which will involve USF physician staffing and expansion of the trauma centers at five HCA hospitals in Florida, in November. At that time, the groups stated that 38 percent of trauma patients in the state receive care at a designated trauma center, which is below the national average.
Tampa General Hospital, which is currently the primary teaching hospital for USF College of Medicine, is one of the hospitals opposing the state's approval of the expansion. St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa and Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla., have also filed challenges with the Division of Administrative Hearings.
