Lifespan restructures leadership; hospital president exits

Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan is restructuring its senior leadership team, and among the changes is that Saul Weingart, MD, PhD, president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital, has left Lifespan.

That's according to an April 12 email from new Lifespan President and CEO John Fernandez, which was published by GoLocalProv. Mr. Fernandez joined Lifespan earlier this year after serving as president of Mass Eye and Ear and president of Mass General Brigham Integrated Care.

"Our goal is to create a senior management structure across Lifespan that will establish clearly defined roles to empower accountability and swift and agile decision-making that aligns with system-wide priorities," Mr. Fernandez told employees. "This will help enhance staff and physician engagement and further integrate physicians into the decision-making process across the system to better serve our patients."

Dr. Weingart became president of Rhode Island and Hasbro Children's hospitals in February 2021. Along with his departure, Steven Lampert, MD, president of Lifespan Physician Group, will be retiring at the end of April.

"We want to thank both valued leaders for their many contributions and impactful work on behalf of our patients and the community and wish them all the best in the future," Mr. Fernandez wrote.

The chief of hospital operations and president of Rhode Island and Hasbro Children's hospitals role will now combine and report to Mr. Fernandez. The chief physician officer position will also report to Mr. Fernandez. Searches will be conducted for these roles.

Additionally, searches will be conducted for the executive vice president of ambulatory role, which will report to the chief physician officer when that position is appointed, and the senior vice president and chief of staff position, which will report to Mr. Fernandez, according to his email.
