Marna P. Borgstrom and Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital have a history. Ms. Borgstrom joined the Connecticut hospital in 1979 as a junior administrator and rose through the ranks to serve as vice president, COO and, as of Oct. 2005, CEO and president of the hospital and the Yale New Haven Health Systems.
During her 30 years at YNHH, Ms. Borgstrom has watched the hospital grow into the hub of the New Haven healthcare delivery network, which includes a children's hospital, a psychiatric hospital, two independent ambulatory surgical centers, a large radiology practice and the Shortline Medical Center in Guileford. While working as chief operating officer under former CEO Joseph A. Zaccagino, who retired in Sept. 2005, Ms. Borgstrom oversaw a budget of $850 million and served as the liaison to the School of Medicine.
She also steered the hospital through planning and construction of the children's hospital and led a patient safety program that trained 40 senior managers. On the Yale Medicine website, she said of her hospital, "We want to be the provider of choice — locally, of course, but also regionally and nationally."
Ms. Borgstrom's tenure has not been without controversy. In 2007, the National Labor Relations Board alleged that some senior hospital administrators, including Ms. Borgstrom, violated federal labor law and conveyed misinformation about the hospital union. The Yale Daily News criticized Ms. Borgstrom's actions and asked her to take personal blame for the violations. Despite some requests from the community that Ms. Borgstrom resign, she remained at the hospital.
Ms. Borgstrom received her master's of public health at the Yale University School of Epidemiology and Public Health. She also serves as chair of the Connecticut Hospital Association board of trustees and is a member of the board of the University Health System Consortium.
