6-system UC president to step down

Michael Drake, MD, president of Oakland-based University of California's system of research universities, health systems and affiliated laboratories, will step down at the end of the 2024 to 2025 school year.

Dr. Drake became president in 2020, leading the university's 10 campuses, six academic health systems, and three nationally affiliated labs, said a July 31 news release.

Achievements of his tenure include creating partnerships with lawmakers to expand opportunities for in-state students to attend California's state universities and expanding quality healthcare access across the state.

Dr. Drake has a 50-year career in university administration, serving as the 15th president of Ohio State University before returning to helm the University of California. Prior to his service at Ohio State, he was UC systemwide vice president for health affairs before becoming chancellor of UC Irvine.

The health systems under the University of California are UC Davis Health, UC San Diego Health, UCI Health, UCLA Health, UCR Health and UCSF Health.
