Susan Green has several years of financial executive experience in the New England area, currently serving as CFO of Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital, and her mentality of finding operational and personal success has driven her to become an exemplary CFO in the sector.
Becker's Hospital Review interviewed Ms. Green earlier this year, and she gave six core themes that should be part of every CFO's mindset, ranging from staying connected to the local community to being aggressive in payor negotiations. Ms. Green also noted that there's no such thing as a "typical day" for hospital CFOs — they just have to be ready and focused at all times to adhere to the hospital's overall mission.
"Your typical [hospital] CFO does not sit in an office and just do financial audits," Ms. Green said. "We're collectively making the best decisions on resource allocation, physician relationships, payor contracting, capital investment, staffing as well as focusing on quality and keeping the patient in mind at all times."
Before joining Lowell General Hospital in 2007, Ms. Green served as CFO and acting CEO of Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass. She also was a director of finance at Winchester (Mass.) Hospital, and she spent eight years in CPA firms focusing on healthcare finance.
