Michael Riordan has served as president and CEO of Greenville (S.C.) Health System since 2006.
Before taking the helm at GHS, Mr. Riordan was as president, CEO and trustee of the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System. Additionally, Mr. Riordan served in the United States Marine Corps for three years as a lieutenant.
GHS has undergone many changes under Mr. Riordan's leadership, and those changes resulted in one major switch for the system — a new name. Greenville Health System was previously known as Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center, but became GHS in March 2013. "GHS has evolved over the last 100 years," Mr. Riordan said in a news release on the name and logo change. "What was once a single free-standing hospital is now an academic medical center and highly integrated delivery system. We are more than just a hospital." In fact, GHS has five medical campuses and 167 affiliated physician practice sites.
When he's not leading GHS, Mr. Riordan donates his time to the healthcare and local communities. He has served as an assembly representative for the Association of American Medical Colleges and an administrative board member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems. Outside of healthcare, Mr. Riordan is the immediate past chair of Greenville Chamber of Commerce, among other commitments.
Mr. Riordan earned a master's degree in education and psychology from Columbia University in New York City and a master's degree in health systems from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
