Since March 2012, John Harney, MBA, has served as president and CEO of the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, after having served as the hospital's COO since 2008. He succeeded Bruce Schroffel, who was named president of the newly created University of Colorado Health System.
Amid the creation of a new health system, Mr. Harney has been able to lead the University of Colorado Hospital through its own growth and expansion: The hospital is opening a new critical care tower to strengthen the multidisciplinary teams and approaches of the hospital.
"Early in my career, I learned the importance of utilizing multidisciplinary teams to address problems and develop creative solutions that can get imbedded in the daily processes. I always found that [interacting with] staff and speaking with them to get their perspective is a great way to get ideas for creating a stronger culture that employees support. The same is true for visiting with patients and their families — good dialogue with constructive criticism helps identify opportunities for improvement or may reinforce that 'things are going well' from the patient perspective," says Mr. Harney.
As president and CEO, Mr. Harney has total responsibility for an operating budget of $880 million and has maintained an operating margin of 12.7 percent. The hospital has 4,200 employees and 1,300 members on the medical staff and records 24,000 acute admissions and 760,000 ambulatory visits annually.
Prior to joining UCH, Mr. Harney served as the executive vice president for NYU Hospitals Center, which includes NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. In his 21 years at NYU, Mr. Harney served in a variety of leadership roles. He serves on the boards of Denver-based Donor Alliance and the WELLS Center for Simulation Learning.
