The breach involves an unprotected laptop containing patient names, birth dates, respiratory test results and partial Social Security numbers. The laptop is yet to be found.
According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, no information has been misused. It is offering a year's worth of free credit monitoring services to patients affected by the breach.
