The drivers of the health information workforce shortage

Sixty-six percent of organizations have reported experiencing a health information workforce shortage in the last two years, according to an October survey from the American Health Information Management Association.

The American Health Information Management Association surveyed 2,526 health information professionals to assess workforce challenges and found the following:

  • Limitations on compensation and a lack of local talent have been contributing to health information staffing issues.

  • Understaffing of health information talent has been increasing burnout and dissatisfaction.

  • Understaffing of health information talent lowered data quality at organizations.

  • Fifty-nine percent of health information professionals surveyed reported that COVID-19 made staffing workloads worse.
