While chief information officers were among the youngest members of the C-suite as recently as 2016, they are now tied for second-oldest, according to a recent Korn Ferry analysis.
Here are four takeaways from the report, which surveyed executives at the top 1,000 U.S. companies by revenue about their ages and tenures.
1. The average age of a CIO across all industries is 55, a four-year bump from Korn Ferry's 2016 finding that the average CIO was 51. Now, CIOs are tied with chief human resources officers and come second only to CEOs, who reported an average age of 59. The average age of the collective C-suite is 56.
2. Within the healthcare industry, CIOs have even more life experience under their belts: The average healthcare CIO is 57, topping HR, marketing and finance chiefs in the industry — at 55, 53 and 54, respectively — and, once again, falling behind only the average 59-year-old CEO.
3. The typical tenure of the CIO is slightly below the C-suite average: According to the report, most CIOs stay in place for 4.6 years, compared to a C-suite-wide average of 4.9 years, driven up by CEOs' nearly seven-year tenure.
4. Healthcare CIOs remain in their positions for even less time, at a rate of about 3.9 years, compared to an industry average of 4.5 years.
