Tech talent dispersed during the pandemic: 4 trends

The pandemic dispersed tech industry talent across the U.S., driving a geographic shift away from Silicon Valley, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal.

Four details:

1. Smaller startups outside of Silicon Valley reported talent from large companies like Facebook, Twitter and Sonos are applying for open jobs. For example, Utah-based startup Podium reported around 600 applications coming from the Bay Area in the past six months, and it hired six senior leaders from companies such as Lyft and GitHub. In the past, employees were more likely to leave smaller startups for the tech giants.

2. The remote work environment during the pandemic disrupted the Silicon Valley culture, eliminating the in-person interaction between tech workers. It also changed financial expectations and the roles tech workers would consider, according to the report.

3. Tech giants are also more open to hiring talent from outside Silicon Valley.

4. Startups can attract talent with growth potential and equity packages. Startups go after experienced leaders to gain the edge among potential venture capital investors. Big tech leaders also bring invaluable skills and broader tech networks to their new roles.
