U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced final rules to support "meaningful use" of EHR, according to a news release from HHS.
One of the two regulations announced defines the "meaningful use" objectives that providers must meet to quality for Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments. The other identifies the technical capabilities required for EHR certification.
With the announcement of these regulations, a concentrated five-year national initiative to adopt and use electronic records in health care can begin. As much as $27 billion may be expended in incentive payments over the next ten years, and individual hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementation and meaningful use of certified EHRs under Medicare and Medicaid.
