Report: Number of Sustainable Health Information Exchanges Increases 33%

An eHealth Initiative report showed that the number of self-sustaining health information exchange initiatives has increased 33 percent since 2010, according to a news release.

The report, "Health Information Exchange: Sustainable HIE in a Changing Landscape," found that 24 of the 196 initiatives that responded reported being self-sustaining, compared to 18 in 2010.

Developing a long-term business model for future growth and sustainability was the biggest challenge HIE programs reported. The 24 sustainable initiatives maintained funding through various strategies, including receiving funding from a primary customer and charging hospitals and providers to participate in the HIE.
