Professional Associations Release Comments on Stage 2 Meaningful Use

The American Health Information Management Association and the American Medical Group Association have individually released comments and recommendations regarding the Health IT Policy Committee's preliminary proposals for stage 2 meaningful use requirements.

According to a letter addressed to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, AMGA President and CEO Donald Fisher expressed concerns on stage 2 meaningful use timeframes, saying the deadlines for vendors to release and certify electronic health records products would be near impossible. This, in turn, would negatively affect the timely adoption of EHRs by eligible healthcare providers.

Both associations called for further clarification and made recommendations regarding HITPC's proposed stage 2 criterion. One proposed rule would require eligible providers to implement one computerized decision support rule. In response to this, AMGA requested more details concerning the selection of the conditions. AHIMA recommended the proposed rule be revised to let providers document why they chose not to adhere to clinical decision support during the point of care.
