The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT has announced that regional health IT extension centers have already enrolled more than 28,000 physicians, according to a Government Health IT news report.
RECs were created last year under the HITECH portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to provide technical assistance and support to healthcare providers switching from paper-based medical practice to EHRs. With funding from the ONC, the goal of the RECs is to provide technical support and education to at least 1,000 physicians in the first two years.
The ONC also launched new support tools for RECs to use, including an interactive online community for exchange of ideas and an education and marketing guide for outreach.
