In "Be Very Careful When Using EHR Shortcut Features," Marion Jenkins, executive vice president at 3T Systems, points out the possibility of misuse of the shortcuts built into electronic health record systems.
Time savers, such as pre-populated templates, drop-down lists and copy/paste functionality are meant to help clinicians handle patient data efficiently. However, it is impossible to determine if these shortcuts are being used appropriately. If there is little training and work-flow redesign involved when an EHR is implemented, then it is likely that the shortcuts will be inappropriately used.
According to Mr. Jenkins, this problem can be solved with better selection and training during the EHR implementation process.
