Text message health interventions are proving to be an effective tool for health management.
According to a study review published in The Annual Review of Public Health, the majority of text message intervention studies found texting was effective when addressing diabetes self-management, weight loss, physical activity, smoking cessation and medication adherence for antiretroviral therapy.
The systematic review did find "limited evidence" to inform recommended intervention characteristics, and suggests further research is needed to establish longer-term intervention effects and explore cost-effectiveness questions.
