77% of health system IT employees eyeing new jobs

Health system IT employees are keeping their options open, with 77% actively seeking new jobs or planning to do so within the next year, according to Bloomforce's "2024 EHR Salary Insights Report."

The report, based on an online survey conducted between November and December 2023, gathered responses from 284 healthcare professionals across various roles, including application analysts, team leads, project managers and people managers. It explored areas such as salary, job satisfaction, work-life balance, talent retention and attitudes toward remote work.

The majority of respondents were employed by large health systems, with 66% working in either multi-state (36%) or single-state (30%) systems. Academic medical centers accounted for 11% of participants.

Here are some key findings from the report:

  • Seventy percent of respondents work remotely, with 74% of them feeling "connected" or "very connected" to their colleagues.

  • Sixty-two percent of remote workers said they would seek another remote position if their employer required them to return to the office.

  • Seventy-two percent of employees expressed satisfaction with their work-life balance, while 60% were similarly satisfied with their workplace culture.

  • Academic medical centers showed the highest work-life satisfaction, with 45% of employees reporting they are very satisfied. In contrast, healthcare IT firms, such as those providing outsourced application support or managed services, saw significantly lower satisfaction levels.

  • A lack of clear career advancement opportunities is driving many IT employees to consider leaving. Among non-leadership staff, nearly half reported no clear path for advancement, and only 21.4% of senior analysts said they knew exactly what was required for their next promotion.
