UAB Health earmarks $380M for Epic switch: 4 things to know

The University of Alabama System is transitioning to an Epic EHR system, which will be implemented at Birmingham-based UAB and the soon-to-be-acquired Ascension St. Vincent's Health System.

Four things to know about the transition:

1. Epic will support electronic health records, revenue cycle management, and clinical research functions, according to a Sept. 25 news release.

2. The platform's full implementation and employee training across all entities will be phased in over the next two and a half years.

3. Employees will receive updates and information relevant to their specific areas of operation as the timeline is finalized, along with training on the new system, the release stated.

4. The UA System Board of Trustees approved a project budget of approximately $380 million to cover implementation, as well as certain labor and operational costs over a seven-year period.
