CIOs are spending more time working with external partners and innovating outside of their own tech stack, according to research from Cambridge-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Meanwhile, they are devoting less time to collaborating with co-workers, the Jan. 18 research brief found. The researchers attributed the changes to colleagues knowing more about technology, and CIOs focusing more on the expanding number of digital interaction points, innovation, and data management.
The researchers surveyed 95 CIOs, chief digital officers and chief technology officers in 2022 and compared the results to a similar survey from 15 years earlier. Here are how their average days have changed:
2022
Running their own tech function: 41%
Collaborating with business colleagues: 23%
Managing a complementary enterprise business capability: 19%
Working with external customers or channel partners: 17%
2007

Collaborating with business colleagues: 36%
Managing a complementary enterprise business capability: 10%
