Hospitals Showing Progress in Reporting Infection Data on National Network

A survey conducted by Premier shows that hospitals are increasingly collecting and reporting healthcare-associated infection data to a national network, according to a Healthcare IT News report.

Medicare is requiring all hospitals participating in the Inpatient Prospective Payment System to enroll in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network by Jan. 2011. Participating hospitals are also required to collect and submit data on central line-associated bloodstream infections to the national network. Hospitals that do not adhere to the requirements by Jan. 2011 of enrolling in and reporting data to the network will face a 2 percent reduction in Medicare inpatient annual payment updates for the 2013 fiscal year.

According to Premier's survey, approximately 60 percent of respondents were already enrolled in the program and 41 percent of respondents are both already enrolled and submitting HAI data. Additionally, 44 percent of approximately 1,000 respondents said experience and proficiency in using NHSN is a challenge for reporting CLABSI, while 41 percent cited enrollment in NHSN by Jan. 2011 as a challenge, according to the report.
