The HIMSS Electronic Health Record Association has urged CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to delay implementing stage 3 of the meaningful use program until the industry has adjusted to stage 2 requirements, according to a letter response to a report released by six Republican senators last month.
In the letter, the association states that interoperability and cost savings will increase over time. It also states that the current proposed timeline will not provide adequate time for:
• CMS and ONC to develop all of the needed materials at a high level of quality.
• Vendors to fully evaluate the regulations and supporting documents, and then develop, test and certify the software.
• Providers to install and implement the software and become meaningful users.
