The Consumer Partnership for eHealth and the Campaign for Better Care said meaningful use stage 3 rulemaking and implementation should not be delayed in a letter response to a report released by six Republican senators last month.
The report criticized the electronic health record incentive programs and government efforts to foster EHR adoption and promote interoperability. It also asked for public input on the program.
The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives formally recommended a one-year extension to stage 2 of meaningful use, which would push back the implementation of stage 3 to 2017 in its letter response to the senators' report.
However, the consumer organizations state, in the letter, that delaying meaningful use is not the solution to fix its flaws. Instead, they suggest, the program should be routinely assessed and improvements be regularly incorporated. They also state that delaying the program would impede access to quality healthcare.
The letter has also been signed by a number of advocacy groups, including the American Association on Health and Disability, the American Hospice Foundation and Caregiver Action Network.
