HIMSS Analytics EMR Stage Designations By Hospital Type

Since 2005, HIMSS Analytics' EMR Adoption Model has tracked electronic medical record adoption in hospitals and health systems throughout the country. The eight-stage model cumulates with stage 7, in which paper records are no longer used.

Just 2.2 percent of hospitals have reached stage 7. The majority of hospitals have reached stages 3 to 5.

The following are the average stages reached by different types of hospitals as of the third quarter of 2013. More information on the EMRAM stages can be found here.

Academic/ teaching hospitals — 4.977
Non-academic hospitals — 3.849

General medical/surgical hospitals — 4.266
Other hospitals — 3.3656

Urban hospitals — 4.044
Rural hospitals — 3.344

Integrated delivery systems — 3.952
Independent hospitals — 3.777
Critical access hospitals — 3.3395
