The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is planning to announce rules to facilitate patients' use of personal electronic health records, according to a USA Today report.
The rules will allow patients to quickly access their test results, physicians' recommendations and details of prior surgeries, treatments and billing records. In addition, patients will be able to enter their own data, such as their weight, to their personal health records.
The first regulations will go into effect in Oct. 2012, according to the report.
