Healthcare CIOs Post-PPACA: More Responsibility, Smaller Raises

While the majority of hospital and health system CIOs have seen their workload increase in both scope and complexity since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the HITECH Act, most have not seen raises that reflect their new responsibilities, according to a whitepaper from executive search firm SSi-SEARCH.

Of the 178 CIOs surveyed, 44 percent said demands on their performance have increased between 25 and 50 percent in the past four years, and 23 percent said their responsibilities have increased between 50 and 75 percent.

This increased responsibility has not been met with increased wages — a plurality (38 percent) of respondents said their compensation has increased 10 percent or less over the same time frame.

More than half of CIOs in the survey reported satisfaction with their current pay, signaling a satisfaction with the CIO position that extends beyond salary. When asked about career trajectories, the most commonly selected next step was to take a position with similar responsibilities at a larger system, with only 11 percent wanting an executive position outside of IT.
