Health systems form AI council with Microsoft

Leaders from Duke Health, Advocate Health, Northwestern Medicine and more are forming a new consortium with Microsoft to ensure AI is being used safely and fairly.

The consortium, the Trustworthy and Responsible AI Network, aims to implement responsible AI principles to enhance the quality, safety and reliability of the technology in the field of healthcare.

Members of the consortium will contribute to enhancing the quality and reliability of AI in healthcare by sharing best practices, focusing on AI use in healthcare settings and emphasizing safety, reliability and monitoring of algorithms.

Additionally, members will enable the registration of clinical AI through a secure online portal; provide tools for outcome measurement, including studying efficacy and value in healthcare settings; and support the development of a national AI outcomes registry for organizations to share real-world outcomes related to AI efficacy, safety and optimization.

According to a March 11 news release from Microsoft, members will not share data or AI algorithms externally.

Members of the consortium include:

  1. Michael Pencina, PhD, chief data scientist of Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health

  2. Peter Embí, MD, senior vice president for research and innovation at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center

  3. David Rhew, MD, global chief medical officer and vice president of healthcare at Microsoft
