The Health IT Policy Committee's 15 workgroups and subcommittees will be consolidated to six to better reflect the ONC's priorities, announced National Coordinator Karen DeSalvo, MD, at a July 8 HITPC meeting.
The HITPC meets regularly to advise the ONC on health IT issues and has played a major role in crafting the meaningful use stage requirements.
The new workgroups will include: Health IT Strategy and Innovation, Advanced Health Models and Meaningful Use, Health IT Implementation, Usability and Safety, Interoperability and Health Information Exchange, Privacy and Security and Consumer Perspective and Engagement.
The new workgroups reflect the ONC's new, post-HITECH Act funding areas of focus as announced by Dr. DeSalvo in June. Going forward, the main foci of the ONC will be: fostering health IT interoperability, supporting care transformation and developing a framework to support the use of health data by providers, insurers, researchers and others.
