Government to Distribute $17M for IT-Based Patient-Centered Outcomes Research

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced three sets of grants and cooperative agreements totaling $17 million will be distributed for patient-centered outcomes research, according to an HHS news release.
The research, which aims to compare treatments and strategies to improve health outcomes for patients, will be funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant money will go toward establishing a network of PCOR centers, enabling PCOR in pediatric emergency medicine and supporting the space needed for community-based providers to engage in this type of research.

"These funds allow us to invest in robust systems and infrastructure to bring patient-centered research knowledge into everyday clinical decision-making for the diverse and vulnerable populations that HRSA serves, and that are often under-represented in this kind of research," HRSA Administrator Mary Wakefield said.

Cooperative agreement awards will go to five organizations to make the Community Health Applied Research Network. The network will focus on PCOR related to the delivery of primary care and HIV/AIDS. Diverse populations and patient subgroups that are not always adequately represented in similar studies will be included.

Another $3.5 million grant will be awarded to Columbia University for PCOR within the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), and a separate $3.5 million will be made to the American Academy of Pediatrics to support development of an electronic health record sub-network within the Pediatric Research Network in the Office Setting. The results from this work will be used to inform guidelines and policies of pediatric practice.
