Mayo Clinic shook up the health IT airwaves last week when the Rochester, Minn.-based health system announced it would move to consolidate its EHR and revenue cycle management system on Epic's platform.
More than 350 healthcare organizations caring for 54 percent of patients in the U.S. currently use Epic's software. With the new contract, approximately one million more patients at Mayo Clinic locations in Minnesota, Florida and Arizona will have their records stored on Epic's platform, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.
Eric Coldwell, analyst with Robert W. Baird & Co., said Epic signing a contract with Mayo is significant, as Mayo is "one of the crown jewels in the market," he said in the report.
Additionally, Mr. Coldwell said pundits are speculating that signing with Mayo would provide "incremental marketing advantage" for Epic, and some are suggesting that Mayo's request for proposals might influence the Department of Defense's request for proposals for its new EHR system, according to the report. Epic and IBM formed a team to compete for the DOD's EHR modernization contract.

The Epic, Mayo contract is still subject to approval from Mayo's board of governors and trustees. A decision is expected in February.
