AHA, College of Healthcare Information Management to ONC: Test Metadata Standards

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the American Hospital Association have issued separate statements urging the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to gather more evidence before implementing the proposed metadata standards for health information exchanges, according to a CHIME news release and AHA News Now report.

In response to the ONC's advance notice of proposed rulemaking for health information exchange metadata standards, CHIME wrote a statement requesting ONC develop and test the standards before considering further action. CHIME recommended ONC gather a volunteer network of technical experts from the Standards & Interoperability Framework to study metadata standards.

AHA has also called for testing of the metadata standards before they are put in place. They recommended the ONC provide evidence that the benefits of the standards would offset the costs of implementation. The AHA said the ONC should postpone any additional rulemaking until pilot tests have been conducted and evaluated.
