6 things to know before HIMSS19

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's annual conference will take place Feb. 11-15 in Orlando, Fla.

Six things to know before HIMSS19:

  1. The conference will showcase more than 300 education sessions, 1,300 vendors and 45,000 health information and technology experts.
  1. Some of the conference's tracks are: clinical informatics and clinical engagement; disruptive care models; user experience, usability and user centered design; and innovation, entrepreneurship and venture investment.
  1. An "interoperability showcase" designed to display promising inventions and successes in healthcare interoperability will feature roughly 20 demonstration areas, an education theater and product marketplace
  1. Attendees can sit in on a rapid-fire pitch competition for vetted Series A health tech companies at an event dubbed Health 2.0's VentureConnect.
  1. One new event this year is the "pharma forum," which will explore the current state of the pharmaceutical industry, payer-provider collaborations and issues related to healthy aging.
  1. The opening keynote panel address, slated for Feb.12 at 8:30 a.m., is titled "Will Consumer-Directed Exchange Disrupt the Healthcare Marketplace?" The discussion will be moderated by HIMSS President and CEO Hal Wolf and panelists will include: CareJourney President Aneesh Chopra; Former National Coordinator for Health IT Karen DeSalvo, MD; Leavitt Partners founder Michael Leavitt; and CMS Administrator Seema Verma.
